The Lenni Lenape
A Look, Past & Present,
at their Cultural Heritage
What are those red rocks around Westtown campus? What's the difference between "Lenape" and "Lenni Lenape"? How do you correctly pronounce Okehocking? Where are Lenape peoples now? How might we work towards right relationships? Bring your wisdom, experiences, and questions to this interactive presentation.
Megan Rose will engage us in learning about Indigenous history, language, and contemporary politics, focusing on the Lenape people, the original inhabitants and stewards of southeastern Pennsylvania. Megan has taught at Westtown in both the Middle and Upper School since 2004. She is the recipient of this year's David Mallery Fellowship. For the past three years, Megan has been studying the Lenape language. She also discovered that ancestors on her father's side were involved in the genocide of Indigenous people in the Northeast, which has led her to consider paths towards reparation.
Children’s program will begin at 8:45 and run through all of Quarterly Meeting. The activities will focus on Lenape tribe legends shared over many generations with children, documented Quaker involvement with the Lenape tribes, and weather permitting walks to some of the 21 sites around the Westtown School campus identified with Lenape language markers. If parents would like older elementary or middle school children to attend part or all of Meeting for Worship or the Quarterly Meeting program on the Lenape tribes, we will be flexible to have children move back and forth to be with their families.”
